A Year with Jesus

I’ve been reading through one of R.P. Nettelhorst’s recent books entitled “A Year with Jesus” and have been thoroughly enjoying it. One of the first things that caught my attention is a quote by William Barclay on one of the first pages that says, “Jesus is not a figure in a book; He is a living presence.” That’s how I feel and especially like finding things that help keep that living presence alive in my life.

There is a page for each day with a short passage taken from the words of Jesus in the New Testament, followed by a few short paragraphs that give extra explanation, information or thoughts based on the selection of scripture.

I like how “A Year with Jesus” brings out new and different things from the Bible, new treasures for me, things I wasn’t aware of before. Some of them may be small details, but give the verse or passage life and a whole new meaning. In some ways you can say that the Bible is a simple book, simple words, but at the same time so deep, so meaningful, true and powerful.

This has been a wonderful addition to my devotional reading and something I look forward to reading each day.

The Christmas Note

I just received “The Christmas Note”, Donna VanLiere’s new, inspirational novel. While it’s a fairly simple, sweet, easy to read book – the truth is, once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down until I had read cover to cover. The same author who brought us several other heartwarming Christmas stories such as “The Christmas Shoes” has done it again in adding this to her wonderful collection.

I think one of the main things that touched me from the book, was the reminder of there being so many around us in each of little worlds, and how we can truly make it a better place through being open to the little possibilities our way. And while I know this is a novel, I have lived these types of experiences myself to know they really do happen.

I think this is a wonderful book, one that can be shared with the whole family, and I can see sitting down in front of a warm fire this Christmas season with a hot cup of chocolate in one hand and “The Christmas Note” in another as I read a chapter at a time with my family.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Thank You, God, For Loving Me

Max Lucado is back again with another adorable book for little ones in the form of a board book. This time its Little Hermie in “Thank You, God, For Loving Me”, a wonderful way for little ones to learn about God’s love for them in a format of a short, easy to read book with cute illustrations.

In this book, Little Hermie and his baby bug garden friends teach little ones about God’s love for them. I’ve read these books with my little nephews and nieces and it’s been a hit with them.

Thank You, God, for Blessing Me

I just got a new book in the mail “Thank You, God, for blessing me”, a new children’s book from Max Lucado with illustrations by Frank Endersby. And all I can say is that it’s just adorable! I had seen and heard a few of the Hermie stories over the years, and this past year have become more familiar with them.

Of course it’s one thing to say that I have enjoyed them, but the true test is what the kids think of them. Well, I have a granddaughter and quite a few nephews and nieces that I’ve read them with and they are quite a hit! I have a little book shelf we refer to when they come over for a visit, and they have come to love each of the stories, the pictures and illustrations and all they contain. This new one is no different.

It’s a “Read to Me – Little Hermie” book, a small board book made for little ones. And while I haven’t had a chance to read it with my little ones yet, I think the way it introduces them to prayer, counting our blessings and giving thanks for them is great. I really enjoy anything along these lines that makes it simple, fun and easy to pass on some of these things to our little ones.

Close Enough to Hear God Breathe

I just finished reading “Close Enough to Hear God Breathe”, a new book by author Greg Paul and the first book I’ve read by him.

The book is quite well written, as he recounts and retells stories throughout, Bible stories as well as his own personal life stories and from his family. I felt the age old Bible stories I know by heart and am familiar with were not only brought to life, but I felt I was able to see and apply them in new and different ways than I have before. Through the stories, Bible verses and accounts, one of the main messages Greg Paul is bringing out is the great love God has for each of us personally and individually and how He longs for that close communion with us, for us to be close enough to hear His whispers. I deeply appreciate this in this day and age when there is so much going on around us and it can be easy for me to “forget” and to get caught up in the day to day.

I have enjoyed this book as an addition to my times of daily devotional and have been strengthen and encouraged by it.

Your 100 Day Prayer

In today’s world that goes so fast, it’s more and more a challenge to find a quiet time and place to come aside a while to spend with the Lord in prayer and communion. So whenever I find a book that stands out to me and speaks to me, helping to strengthen those precious moments, I jump at the chance of reading it. This is why, when I saw “Your 100 Day Prayer – The Transforming power of Actively Waiting on God” by John Snyde available from Thomas Nelson’s Book Sneeze program, I grabbed the chance at reviewing it.

In his book, John Snyde starts off with a short introduction on prayer and suggests the reader choose a specific prayer request that you are given space to write out in the book. The idea is to pray for that request every day for 100 days. The book comes with 100 short sections, one for each day. Starting with a Bible verse, it is followed by a short lesson from that scripture which all in all brings out beautiful truths and beauties. Then a short prayer assignment that goes along with the theme, and a few lines to jot down your progress for the day. All in all, a wonderful aid to boost anyone’s prayer life!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. But I should say from the start, this is not just a book to read through. As it says, it’s a 100 day journey – though of course the reader can choose to adapt and adjust accordingly. But I see the beauty of taking in a little at a time, a little each day as I feel in that way you get so much more out of it. Would I recommend it? Certainly!

Stained Glass Hearts: Seeing Life from a Broken Perspective

I just had a chance to read “Stained Glass Hearts: Seeing Life from a Broken Perspective”, a new book by Patsy Clairmont which I have really enjoyed and it has touched me deeply.

The book’s product description says the following:

Much like stained glass, life's broken pieces become the prism through which God's grace shines most brightly and beautifully.

"Life is no doubt full of difficulties, but it is also filled with promise and possibility," says best-selling author and WOF speaker Patsy Clairmont. In Stained Glass Hearts Clairmont guides readers to view the difficult experiences of life through the lens of God's grace. Using art as a theme, and likening people to stained glass windows, she shares that it's when we're surrounded by darkness that His healing light shines most brightly within us. Encouraging women to step back and see life from this new perspective, Patsy offers help and hope for the dark places of life.

Along with character studies of women in Scripture, and modern-day, relatable stories, each chapter includes:

• Chalice-memorable quotes
• Mosaic-recommended music
• Spires-scriptures and readings
• Litany-sample prayers

Some of my thoughts:

We all live them. Difficult times, the ups and downs in life when we find it hard to see what side is up and what is down, or what good could ever come from it. But it from times such as these that God can take the broken pieces of our lives and make it into something wonderful, a masterpiece. As the beautiful hymn puts it so beautifully,

Something beautiful, something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokeness and stife
But he made something beautiful of my life

Through stories and personal illustrations, Patsy Clairmont helps to remind of this, how God takes what seem like broken pieces of our shattered hopes and dreams and can make them into something beautiful – like a stained glass window!

Fresh-Brewed Life

I’ve just been reading Nicole Johnson’s welcoming book, “Fresh Brewed Life”. With heart and soul opening thoughts and truths, it wakes us to the wonderful, beauty, joy and love in and around us. Here are a few lines that have stood out to me:

“To take pleasure in coffee and benefit from all it has to offer, it must be savored, not merely consumed.” (And may I add, so it is with life, and this is what I feel she is trying to help each of us do.)

“Because the life part is not quite as simple as the coffee part, we’ll spend the rest of the book exploring how our lives can become fresh brewed. You’re invited to begin stirring your soul to wake up the slumbering parts and throw out the two-day-old, stale stuff in the bottom of the glass carafe.”

“Fresh-Brewed Life is a journey of awakenings: to God, as we learn to respond to his compelling love for us; to ourselves, as we recognize our true identity and it illuminates us from the inside out; to others, as we relate in new and healthy ways that bring joy and peace.”

I especially enjoyed the chapter on journaling. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but always thought it was too late to start. The way it was present made it so inviting, it encouraged me to start and that it’s never too late. The chapters have questions scattered throughout as thoughts for jotting down in your journal to react and reflect on. Through journaling, we are encouraged to “ live life and not just let it pass us by, to think about life and the things going on around us”.

As a last note for those who may not be full aware, “Fresh Brewed Life” is written especially for women, from a Christian perspective.

Don't Check Your Brains at the Door

I just received “Don't Check Your Brains at the Door” by Josh McDowell & Bob Hostetler to receive as a part of Thomas Nelson’s Book Sneeze Program.

The book consists of forty-two chapters in six general topics dealing with common myths of the Christian faith on the topics of:

• God
• Jesus
• The Bible
• The Resurrection
• Religion and Christianity
• Life and Happiness

The book is geared to teens and a good start for them on this topic. The chapters grab the reader's attention and relate the idea well, ending with a section called "Brain Food", encouraging us to look in our Bibles and study the ideas a bit more in-depth for ourselves.

This is a good basic apologetics book with good information about the historical evidences of Jesus and His Resurrection. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to see what my teens reaction is to it as well!

Rumors of God

I just finished reviewing “Rumors of God - Experience the Kind of Faith You´ve Only Heard About” by Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson as a part of Thomas Nelson’s book review program.

I feel one of the things the authors are trying to help remind us of, or for those who are not fully aware of, is to help us see through Bible passages how much more God has for each one of us in every area of our lives: our faith, our dreams, our life, and more. It’s easy to fall into ruts, and that includes our thinking as well, which is one reason I enjoy reading books of this sort – on the topic of faith – coming from another angle than the way I tend to see it. Books that help me think and reflect on my life, to see things from another angle, in a different way than I tend to see them and this has helped me to do just that in an easy to read format and not too deep or hard to grasp or understand.

God's Love Letters to You

I just received a copy of Dr. Larry Crab’s recent book, “God’s Love Letters to You – A 40-Day Devotional Experience”. I was very excited about the possibility of reviewing this book as I’m always on the lookout for good devotional books, something to add to daily reading. I enjoy Bible based devotional books, which usually help to bring out other angles of verses and stories which I had not thought of previously. I loved the idea, the concept of a Bible scripture, followed by a short reading, questions for meditation and reflection and a prayer.

To be honest, I was disappointed. From the sounds and looks of it, I expected something different, something better. In my opinion it felt a bit distant, formal, focusing a bit too much on the difficulties and struggles of life without more of the victory and joy of it all. It lacked the personal touch I had expected, especially from the title of God’s love letters to us. I feel it could have gone much farther in bringing out a wide variety of the spiritual beauties found throughout.

Cure for the Common Life

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this inspiring and motivating book by author Max Lucado. I presently find myself at a crossroads in my life and career so it has been especially helpful and applicable as I take time to think, pray and take stock of my life – past, present and future. To see what my personal dreams, hopes, desires and goals are.

I’ve been reading a number of books on finding your strengths, gifts and talents which have been very good and helpful But “The Cure for the Common Life” takes it one step further than many of the traditional books do. It gives it the spiritual and Bible based motivation which to me gives it that extra something that can make a wonderful difference!

I whole heartedly agree with Max, that it’s not just a matter of find a job or working to support your family. These are important, yes, but we were made to and CAN do so much more! We can fulfill our destiny by finding out what we were created for and to do. And by fulfilling this, the calling for my life, it gives so much more meaning to life to where it’s not just me, but my life can be used to God’s glory and in service to Him and others.

The Blessing

“The Blessing” by By John Trent & Gary Smalley is an updated and revised version of their previously published book.

Being a mother of 3 and knowing there is always so much to learn in my parenting, I’m always on the lookout for good books on the topic so this book automatically caught my eye.

As we area already aware, children are begging for acknowledgement from us as their parents and this book gives a greater understanding of the most important thing a parent can give to their child. It ties in Christian values to modern psychology.

Some of the things we see Jesus show in the Gospels are, "a meaningful touch, a spoken message, expressing high value, special future and active commitment", attributes not easily lived, expressed or seen in this day and age, but oh so valuable.

I enjoyed reading this book and am more deliberate in my parenting and interaction with my children to help give them a solid foundation for their lives and future.

Strike it Rich with Pocket Change

I just finished reading "Strike it Rich with Pocket Change" by Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen. It brought back many childhood memories; times when coin and stamp collection was one of our favorite pass times as children. And now reading about this angle of coin collecting, things take on a whole new light! I was happy to see my kids get into it as well and my daughter wants to start applying some of her newly learned skills in seeing if she can spot and find some of these treasures.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I know that I really enjoyed the book, the way it was present easily, simply and gives the tools needed for a beginner like me to feel they can do it too. With the photos, the comments and details I look forward to trying it out for myself just as soon as I find a good magnifying glass, collecting pocket change as well as rolls of change from the bank all to see what I can find!

The Waiting Place

If you’re the type of person, like me, who wonders many times why things happen, this is a wonderful reminder that in each of our seeming setbacks, delays or difficulties, God has and would like to bring something wonderful from and through it! Eileen does a great job at recreating many of her own personal stories and helping you as a reader feel what she was feeling. She’s a great story teller.

I like how it takes many of those situations and relationships we all experience at some point in our life, things which can be challenging and difficult, and help us see just how precious life and each of us are.

I’ve greatly enjoyed this book, and have kept it by my bedside as an easy read for little moments throughout the day – when I get up in the morning, winding down after a long day or at little moments here or there. It’s been something that helps me think, think back on my life, my experiences, what I have learned from them, and see if there is anything else I may not have seen at first glance. And for the future, I want to see the things I experience much more in this light – what more is there in each situation or person that comes my way that I can learn from, that I can enjoy, that I can take with me and treasure out of my own “Waiting Places”.

Put Your Dreams to the Test

John Maxwell has become one of my favorite authors and speakers, and I look forward to each of his new books. I had the chance to review “Put Your Dream to the Test” and have really enjoyed it. Once again, Maxwell’s writing is very clear, easy to read and to the point.

I haven’t been such a good long term planner, especially when it comes to my life and life’s goals and this is something I’m working on changing and really appreciate the help and guidance from books like this. I really enjoy the way he uses real life stories to help illustrate the points he brings out, it helps it take on life, helps me grasp the concept more clearly and the lesson sticks with me much easier. And while I have more to learn in some areas than others, I found something to learn from and meditate on in each chapter. I feel he lays out some of the keys points and principles for making dreams reality.

If you’re someone like me who is defining my dream and bringing it to life, than I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

Beyond Talent

John Maxwell has done it again, this time grabbing me from the very first moment I cracked the book. This book is a great reminder and gives great motivation to help us reach what we can and were meant to reach. Many times it’s just that 1 extra step, that one degree of difference that takes hot water and brings it to a boil.

To say I have enjoyed this book is an understatement. I’ve found it especially helpful at this point in my life where I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my career and I’ve found it give me great tools in fine tuning my focus to see what I should maximize on and put my efforts in.

In his book, Maxwell says,

“I’ve discovered thirteen key choices that can be made to maximize any person’s talent:

1. Belief lifts your talent.
2. Passion energizes your talent.
3. Initiative activates your talent.
4. Focus directs your talent.
5. Preparation positions your talent.
6. Practice sharpens your talent.
7. Perseverance sustains your talent.
8. Courage tests your talent.
9. Teachability expands your talent.
10. Character protects your talent.
11. Relationships influence your talent.
12. Responsibility strengthens your talent.
13. Teamwork multiplies your talent.”

This book will not be put away in my bookshelf, but will be one that I will reading and rereading and studying so I can fully grasp and apply the wonderful points he covers.

Max on Life

About the Book…

We have questions. Child-like inquiries. And deep, heavy ones.

In more than twenty-five years of writing and ministry, Max Lucado has been the receiving line for thousands of such questions. The questions come in letters, e-mails, even on Dunkin Donuts napkins. In Max on Life he offers thoughtful answers to more than 150 of the most pressing questions on topics ranging from hope to hurt, from home to the hereafter.

Max writes about the role of prayer, the purpose of pain, and the reason for our ultimate hope. He responds to the day-to-day questions—parenting quandaries, financial challenges, difficult relationships—as well as to the profound: Is God really listening?

A special addendum includes Max’s advice on writing and publishing.
Including topical and scriptural indexes and filled with classic Lucado encouragement and insight, Max on Life will quickly become a favorite resource for pastors and ministry leaders as well as new and mature believers.

My Thoughts…

When I first started reading “Max on Life”, I have to say that it didn’t really grab me as other books have or as I thought it would. I started reading it as though it were for me, and after a few minutes put it down. I think this is mainly because I already have a strong Christian background and some of the questions it covers seem very simple and questions that don’t really bother me. Later as I thought about it, I realized that there are and will be many different readers and it will be something different for each one. There will be some like myself but then others for whom this book will present and answer real life questions they have. And as I thought about it a bit more and picked the book up again, I read in a new light - The light of this book serving as a tool for me to use in my contact and interaction with others. I feel it can serve as a guide for ideas when I am faced with others asking me similar questions having to do with my faith, God and many of other questions in life.

Knock 'Em Dead 2011

Wow! This book has come as a god send. I was interested in this book being that I’ve found myself at a time of career change in my life and from reading reviews of past editions I felt this book may be of great use and value. And I haven’t been disappointed.

I have learned so much from this book, things which I feel will be of great help and strength to me in searching out my new career and job opportunities.
I’ve always dreaded having to put together my resume, but I’m starting to see it from new and different angles, and feel empowered for writing resumes that will be more successful overall.

It’s helping me to become a bit more familiar with what job interviewers are looking for. I not only feel better prepared to face this, but also to ask myself what my personal work ethics are and I have developed the qualities that are not only what others are looking for, but are qualities which will help me get ahead overall in all areas of my life.

All in all, I feel this book is a great help and aid to anyone finding themselves looking for a job in today’s job market or considering a career change and needing some additional help and information in their decision making.

Hermie and Friends

I always keep my eyes open for good kids materials to use with the children I work with, and also to be able to pass them on to my grand daughter. I had seen some of the previous “Hermie and Friends” collections, so jumped at the opportunity of checking this new one out when I saw it advertised!

I like the way the stories each focus on a pretty specific topic and through the fun, colorful and interactive stories help to bring the lesson to light for the children. As the saying goes, “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” and so it is true once again that a tool like this goes very far in helping children to see some of the values and morals we try to explain and teach them in their lives. It can be one thing when situations come up in day to day interactions with them for me to explain some of the ins and outs, but when they see it in such a fun, interactive way, it helps it go much farther.

Hermie and Friends “A Bug Collection” Volume 3 is a 3 DVDs set with 1 episode on each DVD, focusing on one concept at a time. Included in this set are:

“Milo the Mantis Who Wouldn’t Pray” – This story teaches children about prayer, that we don’t have to do anything special or use any special words to talk to the Lord, He’s always right here to listen and answer.

“Buzby and the Grumble Bees” – In this episode, children learn about behaving.

“Hailey and Bailey’s Silly Fight”. – Then it’s on to a lesson on how silly it is to fight, especially over little things.

There are also a couple of coloring pages for each story that you can print out if you use your DVD drive on your computer. An extra plus!

Same Life, New Story

The blurb for “Same Life, New Story: Change Your Perspective to Change Your Life” starts out explaining the following:

“Move from what is to what can be by changing how you think and talk to yourself. Using powerful character studies of ten women from Scripture, as well as modern-day stories from her work as a professional life coach, Bible teacher Jan Silvious helps women choose new stories instead of dumping, or wallowing in, their old lives.”

This book caught my attention and I was attracted to the concepts it mentions on how changing your perspective on your past and things in the present can change your life for the better.

This is written in a conversational, easy to read style, a good book to use as a base for a Bible study group and includes questions to reflect and mediate on. Each chapter discusses a different woman from the Bible and as you read about each one, you are led to see how this can be applied to your personal day to day life.

Slave - The Hidden Truth About Your Identity In Christ

I appreciate the study and research John MacArthur had done to prepare his book, “Slave – The Hidden Truth About Your Identity in Christ”. To not only bring to light this hidden word that has been lost in most of our modern translations, but also adding the words and writings of many of the Christian greats throughout the ages and what they have to say on the topic.

It has helped to answer for me more deeply the question of “What IS a Christian?” and what does it mean when I say this? It takes the definition to a new level, giving much more meaning and depth to other verses in the Bible as well. We’ve heard many a time the question, “What Would Jesus Do?” In this context it takes on new meaning, it’s a way of life, not a religion or a way of thinking but a way of living.

I find myself taking stock of my life, to evaluate what I believe and what I’m doing about it. It’s helping to redefine my personal faith and what it’s built on. I want to stay true to that personal, inner conviction; I want that to be what defines me, to be a sample of a true believer. Not just in word or in tongue, but in the things I do, the things I say, how I treat others, how I think, how I act.
And as he says in the preface of the book, “I am seeing riches of my Salvation in new and radical ways” and this is truly one word that changes everything.

This book was gratefully received from Thomas Nelson Publisher as part of their booksneeze.com blogger program. I am not required to write positive review and therefore, the review is 100% opinion of my own.
